On experts and hedgehogs

"An expert is a man who has made all of the mistakes which can be made in a narrow field."  - Niels Bohr

Experts are by definition hedgehogs. They are specialists in a field. Their mistakes are specialized and it is their failures with very specific problems that make them experts. Experts will usually not make the same mistake twice. This specific experiential learning is valuable.
